Congratulations to Trinity Fellows Prof. James Arthur and Prof. Pekka Sinervo and alumnus John Godfrey.
James Arthur, C.C.:聽For his seminal contributions to contemporary mathematics, notably through his groundbreaking advancements to the theory of numbers鈥 trace formula,聽a complex mathematical formula that relates geometric and spectral information.
A leading mathematician, University Professor James Arthur is among two University of Toronto researchers named to the highest rank of the Order of Canada. 鈥淚 have had scientific recognition in Canada, but I feel very proud 鈥 and thrilled 鈥 to be recognized more broadly with the Order of Canada,鈥 he said.
Pekka Sinervo, C.M.:聽For his contributions to particle physics and for his groundbreaking research in the study of heavier quarks.
Professor聽Pekka Sinervo, of U of T鈥檚 department of physics, is being recognized for decades of working to understand the basic building blocks of our universe 鈥 atoms, molecules and the like. With a focus on electromagnetic forces, Sinervo uses the Large Hadron Collider to study particle interactions at very high energies. Having written or co-written more than 400 articles in peer-reviewed journals, his research group was involved in the discovery of the top quark, the heaviest known particle, and now uses the quark as a tool to search for evidence of new,聽massive particles.聽Sinervo is a聽former dean of U of T’s聽Faculty of Arts & Science and, from聽2008 to 2015, served as聽senior vice-president of聽research at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR).
John Ferguson Godfrey, P.C., C.M.:聽For his commitment as a public servant and educator who has enriched Canada鈥檚 media landscape.
