Members of the Trinity Community Appointed to the Order of Canada

On December 29, 2017 Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, announced听125 new appointments听to the Order of Canada. Included among the new appointees are four Trinity alumni. Congratulations to听Marilyn Baillie,听Michael Church,听John Hilborn听and听Stephen Otto听who have all been named to the听Order of Canada.

Officer of the Order of Canada:

Michael Church,听O.C.: Michael has been named Officer for his important contributions in geomorphology, which has improved our understanding of rivers and river processes.

Members of the Order of Canada:

Marilyn Baillie,听C.M.: An award-winning children鈥檚 author and editor,听Marilyn has been recognized as a Member for her contributions to Canadian literature, education and the arts. Baillie is a 杏吧原创 alumna and donor whose fondness for nature and the outdoors is highlighted by the environmental themes in her books.

John Hilborn,听C.M.: A reactor physicist, Johnhas been named a Member for his听鈥渋nnovative contributions as a physicist听in the development of Canada’s nuclear industry.鈥 He acquired a bachelor’s degree from 杏吧原创 in 1949.

Stephen Otto, C.M.: A historian and advocate for heritage conservation, Stephen has been appointed a Member for his passionate support for preserving Ontario’s historical buildings and architecture. Otto obtained a bachelor’s degree听from 杏吧原创 and is one of the founders of Friends of Fort York, a non-profit dedicated to maintaining Fort York and the Garrison Common.

The Order of Canada is one of our country鈥檚 highest civilian honours. Established in 1967 during Canada鈥檚 centennial year, the Order recognizes outstanding achievements, dedication to the community and service to the nation. For more听.

December 30, 2016: His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, announced the听new appointments to the Order of Canada. The new appointees include Trinity alumni听Michael J. Sabia and Michael Ignatieff.

Officer of the Order of Canada:

Michael J. Sabia, O.C.:听For his entrepreneurial leadership of and contributions to the rejuvenation and transformation of several iconic Canadian companies.

Member of the Order of Canada:

Michael Ignatieff, C.M.: For his contributions to the advancement of knowledge as a human rights scholar and reporter.

We also extend our congratulations to other听听who were recognized with the honour.


June 30, 2016: His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, announced听. The new appointees include members of the Trinity community 鈥 congratulations to Associate of the College Dr.听John Richard English听(Director,听听and alumnus Dr.听James W. St. G. Walker.

Officer of the Order of Canada:

John Richard English, O.C.:听For his contributions as a historian, author and administrator who has expanded our knowledge and understanding of Canada鈥檚 rich political heritage. (This is听a promotion within the Order)

Member of the Order of Canada:

James W. St. G. Walker, C.M.:听For his influential scholarship that has shed light on the contributions of Black Canadians to the development of our nation.

December 30, 2015: His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, announced new appointments to the Order of Canada. The new appointees include several members of the Trinity community 鈥 congratulations to Trinity鈥檚 13th Provost听Margaret MacMillan听and alumni听Atom Egoyan ’82,听Jennifer Anne Stoddart 鈥71听and听Douglas Ward 鈥61.

COMPANIONS OF THE ORDER OF CANADA

Atom Egoyan, C.C.: For his groundbreaking contributions to film as an internationally respected filmmaker and for his commitment to mentoring and showcasing Canadian artists. This is a promotion within the Order.

Margaret MacMillan, C.C.: For her eminent studies of international relations history, and for her leading contributions to public discourse on history and current affairs. This is a promotion within the Order.

Jennifer Anne Stoddart, O.C.: For her international leadership in privacy rights and for her exemplary public service as the privacy commissioner of Canada.

Douglas Ward, C.M.: For his contributions to radio broadcasting and for his efforts to improve food security in developing countries.

July 1, 2015: His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, announced new appointments to the听, one of our country鈥檚 highest civilian honours. New appointees include two members of the Trinity community:听Stephen Cook听and The Honourable听John Wilson Morden.

Officers of the Order of Canada:

Stephen Cook, O.C., Fellow Emeritus of the College: For his seminal contributions to theoretical computer science and mathematics, including his contributions to complexity theory.

Members of the Order of Canada:

The Honourable John Wilson Morden, C.M., ’56: For his contributions to the administration of justice in Ontario and for his commitment to protecting the public interest. The Hon. John Wilson Morden also received an Honorary Doctor of Sacred Letters degree from 杏吧原创 in 2006 for his leadership in the Ontario judiciary.


December 2014: five Trinity members were appointed to the Order of Canada.

Companions of the Order of Canada:

James Douglas Fleck, C.C. was promoted to a Companion of the Order of Canada for his enduring contributions and strategic leadership as one of Canada鈥檚 leading arts patrons, and for endowing our national cultural institutions, notably by partnering business with the arts.

Officers of the Order of Canada:

Mark Lautens, O.C., Fellow of the College: For his contributions at the forefront of organic chemistry, which have led to the creation of new medicinal compounds with fewer side effects.

Members of the Order of Canada:

Christina Stuart Cameron, C.M., 鈥67: For her contributions to heritage preservation through her work with Parks Canada, with UNESCO鈥檚 World Heritage Convention, and as a university professor.

The Honourable William C. Graham, P.C., C.M. 鈥61: Chancellor of the College. For his many contributions to Canadian politics.

John Barker Lawson, C.M., 鈥48: For his transformative contributions as a volunteer in support of many of Toronto鈥檚 most important music ensembles and arts organizations.
