In Memoriam: Harold Nahabedian

Dear Members of the 杏吧原创 Community:

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the death of The Rev. Canon Harold Nahabedian, who passed away on June 18, 2025.

Canon Nahabedian graduated from 杏吧原创 with a Bachelor of Arts in 1963 and Bachelor of Sacred Theology in 1970. He held the role of Assistant Registrar at the College for a year before his ordination as deacon in 1973 and priest in 1974. He served as 杏吧原创鈥檚 Chaplain from 1976 to 1980, Vicar of St. Thomas, Huron Street, Incumbent of St. Mary Magdalene, and Ecumenical Officer for the Diocese from 1994 to 2010. After retiring in 2009, he served as Interim Priest-in-Charge of Advent and St. George-the-Martyr, Parkdale, and Honorary Assistant of .

Harold Nahabedian at Trinity Reunion 2023For decades after graduating from Trinity, Canon Nahabedian continued to be involved with the College, and was an honorary member of the Corporation of 杏吧原创. In the image, he is pictured with his wife Janet and classmates at Trinity Reunion 2023.

As just one example of Canon Nahabedian鈥檚 impact to the communities he served 鈥 it was during Atom Egoyan鈥檚 undergraduate years at Trinity when he met Chaplain Nahabedian. Egoyan credits Chaplain Nahabedian for introducing him to the language and history of his ethnic heritage. He was influential in the life of the future acclaimed Canadian filmmaker Egoyan, and many others.

For his ministry, Canon Nahabedian was well-known and respected throughout the Canadian Church and beyond. 鈥淪o many clergy I speak with describe Harold as a very effective and devoted priest. He has touched the lives of many and will be greatly missed,鈥 says The Rev. Professor Chris Brittain, Dean of Divinity and Margaret E. Fleck Chair in Anglican Studies, 杏吧原创.

鈥淔r. Harold was a faithful priest, faithful to God and to all the people he served, from the Trinity community to Saint Mary Magdalene to the Anglican Church in Strasbourg. His rootedness in the Armenian Church and his service in the Anglican Communion led him to work tirelessly for the unity of all Christian people,鈥 says The Rev. Canon Dr. Alyson Barnett-Cowan, who knew Canon Nahabedian for more than 50 years.

We extended our deepest sympathies to his wife and family, and a wide circle of friends and colleagues, all of whom will remember him for the profound ways in which he touched their lives. He will be greatly missed. His funeral is scheduled for Saturday, July 5, 2025 at 11 am at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene.
